EHN, beyond the wind.

The construction of the El Perdón wind farm by EHN in 1994 represented a milestone as a result of the introduction of innovative measures that were later replicated in wind farms all over the world.

In the next few years the company continued its growth through the installation of new wind farms in Navarra, all the while innovating and seeking excellence. It also installed a biomass plant through wheat straw combustion at Sangüesa and a photovoltaic solar power plant near Tudela.

At the same time, it began a program of national and international expansion through its participation in Energías Eólicas Europeas (EEE). As an initial international venture, it participated with 50% of the capital of La Compagnie du Vent in France.

In late 2002, Iberdrola withdrew from the stockholding structure of EHN and both companies decided to develop their own independent business projects. This operation led to the creation, by Sodena, Caja Navarra and Cementos Portland, of Corporación EHN (CEHN). In July 2003, Acciona acquired 50% of the capital of CEHN, the other 50% remaining in the possession of Sodena and Caja Navarra.

The entry of Acciona was a decisive boost to the incipient international process being undertaken by EHN, one that required major additional financial resources.

Therefore, at the end of 2004 Sodena considered its initial objectives achieved (and clearly surpassed), and sold its stake in CEHN to Acciona. The company that emerged from this operation was named Acciona Energía.

An entire industrial sector linked to clean energies

Casoxito EHN fotoEMSodena promoted the creation of EHN and supported each and every one of the company’s initiatives as a partner for 15 years. This helped to make Navarra what it is today: an international benchmark, in the development of renewable energies, and EHN to consolidate itself as one of the leading companies in the world in the field.

It also favored the creation of a considerable industrial sector in our region linked to clean energies, the establishment of technical centers (CENER, CENIFER) and several other technological advanced that have consolidated Navarra as an international center of excellence in renewable energies.

Navarra is a pioneer in the generation of renewable energy, a leadership position it has gained thanks to the strategic vision designed by the Government of Navarra in the 1990s that had its origins in the creation of Energía Hidroeléctrica de Navarra (EHN), now Acciona Energía.

In 1989 the Government of Navarra drove the creation of EHN with the aim of reducing our energy dependence through the exploitation of renewable energies, initially mini hydro and later wind, solar and biomass.

The new company would make use of natural and public resources, so the presence of public capital in its stockholder structure was essential. Caja Navarra supported Sodena as an institutional partner, together with Iberdrola and Cementos Portland as technological and industrial partners.

EHN was born in a context in which environmental problems linked to the production and consumption of energy started to raise concern. Fully aware of this, in 1991 the company started to install automatic meteorological stations in different points of our territory to evaluate its wind and solar resources. The information provided by these stations confirmed the enormous potential available.

In December 1994, the company put its first wind farm into service on the El Perdón mountain range near Pamplona. This was preceded by a major effort of communication to all stakeholders involved about the raison d’être of the project and its energy, economic, environmental and social advantages.

EHN also propitiated the creation of Gamesa Eólica in 1994. This company was its only customer in the early years, making possible its expansion through the biggest order for wind turbines ever placed in the world.

The wind farm’s good results led to a Wind Power Plan for 1995-2000. Once the wind power map for Navarra was completed, and incorporating the boost provided by new renewable technologies, Sodena sold its package of stocks to the Acciona business group in 2004.

This operation, in addition to providing an excellent financial yield for Sodena and a payout of dividends to its stockholders, increased our company’s prestige as a publicly-owned venture capital company at national and international level.

Sodena’s participation in EHN (now Acciona Energía) enabled the creation, development and consolidation of an industrial fabric based on renewable energies, diversifying existing sectors and creating wealth and jobs. This is how our territory became a world benchmark in the field.

There is no doubt about the cross-cutting nature of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector and its contribution to business development and the information society. In the field of companies, for example, ICTs favour innovation in new business models and organisational processes, which in turn leads to major improvements in productivity.

Thanks to technology it is possible to manage processes, communications, information and data that individuals, companies and other bodies need to save.

Information security first, following by cybersecurity (with the arrival of the Internet) are, therefore, two key activities that have evolved and been developed over the years. R&D plays a key role in these areas.

In 2006, the public company NGA (currently integrated within Sodena) acquired a share of S21sec, a company that specialises in digital security services and technology. The objective was to protect the information and other critical digital assets of high value to organisations.

The incorporation of NGA as a shareholder in S21sec enabled the company to set up a Security Operations Centre in Navarra to offer a continuous 24/7 security follow-up and monitoring service, plus an R&D centre. Two activities which, in addition to be pioneering and exclusive in our region, have created a high number of highly-skilled jobs with international certification.

In 2012 (the year in which Sodena’s divestment process in the company was completed), the firm became a national benchmark in its specialist field (26 of the 35 companies listed on the IBEX are its customers). It is also involved in a major process of international expansion.

The investment in S21Sec represented an ideal response to one of our objectives: identify lines of activity in ICTs with potential for growth that are viable and able to generate skilled employment in Navarra.
